In just a few years the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has taken a massive leap. What started initially as ChatGPT has now transverse itself into many things. Now every aspect of technology is solely starting to adopt AI as the writing on the wall is clear. Things have progressed at such a rapid rate, that some people have started to wonder ‘do we still need people’. While this statement sounds like a stretch there have been instances where these ideas have been touted.

Recently, German telecommunication giant T-Mobile have partnered with OpenAI to take over their customer support. However, do we still need people is a question that is not going away anytime soon. In fact, it is only getting stronger.

But just a little thought and we start to see the cracks in such arguments. Before this, however, we have to look at the advantages and disadvantages of using Artificial Intelligence.

    Advantages of Artificial Intelligence

While it might be a long stretch to say that AI can replace humans, it does have its advantages which can make our workplace more efficient.

    Can drastically reduce errors

As AI is still in its infancy it cannot perform many tasks. However, it has gotten extremely brilliant at spotting and correcting errors. For example: ChatGPT has gotten extremely good at finding errors in python script however it is still far from satisfactory when it is told to write python commands from scratch.

However, even with such limitations AI has proven that it can greatly increase the efficiency of the workplace if used in the right way. This also gives more confidence to an employee in the workplace who knows that now since there is an additional layer of security. Working in AI will also allow them to analyze patterns of their errors that they might be making thus helping them correct them.

Can offer round the clock services

The normal working hours for an employee generally ranges from eight to ten hours. However, deploying an AI offers round the clock services. So while a human needs rest to recuperate their energy to work again, an AI software can do its job 24 hours a day.

For example, an AI tool that protects a company’s website from cyber attacks from malicious actors can do so round the clock. And it is just not limited to cyber attacks as it can only help in maintenance, and updation. In addition, AI can also complete a lot of work without the need of human intervention.

     Reduces bias

One of the greatest challenges that an organization faces in any of its functioning is bias. And most of the time the reason for bias is the human factor. While you can train employees to be professional and neutral they are humans at the end of the day and are bound to have their own views.

However, AI can easily improve this process massively as it does not have emotions. Using AI in tandem with humans can massively eliminate bias. One of the areas where they can massively help is hiring. Several researchers have established that hiring is susceptible to biases such as gender, racial or socioeconomic. Therefore using AI Interview Intelligence tool like BarRaiser is a good way to reduce bias.

    Can do large tasks

Since AI now has the ability to do most of the tasks on its own after being given a command, organizations can now perform huge tasks. As mentioned earlier, AI has gotten pretty good at following commands, spotting and correcting errors, and identifying patterns.

For example, imagine a company that wants to handle maintenance and provide security updates. Doing it manually would have tracking software developers going through large swathes of data.

However, now with the use of AI now one can analyze data and identify patterns in order to provide solutions. Another example of it can be during hiring where the AI can help companies streamline the entire recruitment process. This includes selecting CVs, conducting interviews which provide real time info to the interviewer preparing detailed reports on the candidates.

    Limitations of Artificial Intelligence

We have talked about how great but can it actually replace humans? Well the answer is no. And this is going to be the case for a long time.

    Inefficient creative skills

One of the major disadvantages of AI is that it relies on information already present. This means that it does not have the ability to create new creative content on its own. For example, if a person working as a content writer has the skills that cannot be replaced by AI as it will only write content that has a high chance of being caught by a plagiarism tool.

    Lack of empathy

One of the major reasons why there is a growing call for human oversight is because AI doesn’t recognize empathy. However, that is a huge red flag in a workplace. For example, we can tell it about emotions but we can’t train them to recognize it. And a system without empathy can have disastrous consequences.

For example, the use of AI has seen a massive rise in customer support. However, an AI can only provide answers that are programmed with. In certain situations where a customer is facing an emergency, the AI will not recognize and will treat it as a normal call and will not prioritize the customer’s requests.

AI is as good as its data

Several companies have developed a generative artificial intelligence chatbot. None of it has matched the efficiency of OpenAi’sChatGPT. The reason for this is simple: the quality of data on which ChatGPT was trained was far superior that any of its competitors.

And this is the problem with AI that it needs really good quality data to become a good product. While humans have the capability to collect data, refine it and fine tune it according to the needs of an organization.

    Do we still need people

So, now it brings us back to the same question: do we still need people? And the answer is simple, Yes we do.It is because AI has limitations and even in future it will still need human oversight. The lack of empathy and creativity might be overcome in the future but that is the thing with any technology no progress is good enough to make it foolproof.

Thus AI is more likely to be an extension of human capabilities rather than a replacement for it. So, we still need people.
